another one on my to-watch list: rainy dog. i think it’s about a japanese yakuza who goes to taiwan to start a new life, but gets caught up with local triads. i didn’t wanna read the wiki entry and spoil it.

three times is a critically acclaimed film by hou hsiao-hsien. on my to-watch list.

curse of the golden flower (2006, china)
click to enlarge the image and appreciate the details of the costumes.

bolo yeung is the ultimate villain. he’s played a bad guy who rarely speaks for the past 3 decades, sharing the screen with everyone from bruce lee to jean-claude van damme. furthermore, he’s killed more people than darth vader. bolo > satan.
john woo’s red cliff, the most expensive asian film to date, is about to be released in the usa, albeit an edited down version. the original release was 2-parts, released in asia last year (part 1) and this year (part 2).
for those who don’t know, the film is based on the three kingdoms period of ancient china, a war-infested era that has spawned numerous legends and of course video games, cartoons, comics, etc. now, we get to see it an epic film version…
step your film game up if you haven’t seen sister street fighter. it’s an old 70’s japanese production, but the story is based in the streets of hong kong and is about revenge, drug lords, various martial arts gangs (kung-fu, karate, muay thai), etc.
and it stars the legendary sonny chiba. classic!
jungles of thailand. weird buddhist cult called the worm tribe. bloody viruses. monsters. chow yun fat. guns. comedy.
